Prayer Timings

Each of the five daily prayers has a specific time window determined by the position of the sun

These times vary throughout the year and by geographical location.

"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."

Understanding Prayer Times

Fajr (Dawn Prayer)

Fajr Prayer Time

Starts: At dawn, when the first light appears in the sky

Ends: At sunrise

Identification: When there is enough light to distinguish a white thread from a black thread

Fajr is performed before the sun rises. It's important to wake up early to perform this prayer before sunrise.

Dhuhr (Noon Prayer)

Dhuhr Prayer Time

Starts: When the sun passes its zenith (highest point) and begins to decline

Ends: When an object's shadow becomes equal to its height (enters Asr time)

Identification: When the sun begins to decline from its highest point in the sky

Dhuhr is performed in the early afternoon. In many countries, this coincides with the lunch break.

Asr (Afternoon Prayer)

Asr Prayer Time

Starts: When an object's shadow becomes equal to its height (Hanafi: twice its height)

Ends: At sunset

Identification: When the sun is still bright but has descended significantly from its zenith

Asr is performed in the late afternoon. It's recommended to pray Asr before the sun starts to turn orange.

Maghrib (Sunset Prayer)

Maghrib Prayer Time

Starts: Immediately after sunset

Ends: When the red twilight disappears (enters Isha time)

Identification: When the sun has completely set below the horizon

Maghrib should be performed as soon as possible after sunset. It's the prayer that breaks the fast during Ramadan.

Isha (Night Prayer)

Isha Prayer Time

Starts: When the red twilight disappears from the sky

Ends: At midnight (Islamic midnight, halfway between sunset and dawn) or before dawn according to some scholars

Identification: When complete darkness has fallen

Isha is performed at night. While it can be performed until midnight, it's recommended not to delay it unnecessarily.

Did You Know?

In regions near the poles (far north or south), prayer times can become challenging during certain times of the year when there is continuous daylight or darkness. In such cases, scholars recommend following the times of the nearest location where day and night can be distinguished or following the times of Mecca.
